aXcess: Empowering At-Risk Children and Youth Among a Least-Reached People Group in Southeast Asia
Work on a multicultural team with programs for empowering youth in corrections and ministry to at-risk children and families. Our team’s focus is multiplying communities of faith through contextual discipleship-making among the people from the majority religion. One of our programs partners with local stakeholders to care for the holistic needs of youth in corrections as they transition back into society. This program offers training such as pre-discipleship, mental and physical wellness, education and work planning, and family relationships. We are passionate about creating and facilitating context-fitted responses to social needs. Those looking to join a passionate team who loves this place and its people, please apply!
Position Type
- International worker (IW)–aXcess –Vocational Track or Clergy Track
- Creative-access country (CAC)
- Single or couple
- Church planting, community center, rural and urban community development, discipleship, education
Responsibilities:
- Multiply communities of Jesus followers among this unreached people group through context-fitted discipleship
- Live among local people to learn the language, culture, and current needs of the community while building friendships that lead to regularly demonstrating and proclaiming the gospel
- Build meaningful relationships through good communication in both the national language and the local language
- Serve on a multi-cultural team that highly values contextualization
- Partner with teammates and locals to support families at-risk, particularly (but not exclusively) incarcerated youth in our re-entry program
Ministry Location Information:
Join a multi-cultural, multi-structure team working among the third largest unreached people group (UPG) in this southeastern Asian country. Live in a growing city of 1 million people, surrounded by rice paddies, beaches, and hills. The weather is famously hot and tropical, and the food is delicious and spicy. Live in a rented home in a strategic location and embrace life together with your local community. Some Western-style amenities are available. A small community of cross-cultural ministry-focused believers (both ex-pat and national) meets regularly, but no established international church exists. This will necessitate building deep relationships with nationals and practicing intentional self-care. Currently, there are limited visa options, so the applicant would be expected to play a key role in creating a pathway for his/her first visa (possibly by getting a student visa in a local university as an international student).
Characteristics of International Workers:

- Education and work experience
- Cross-cultural awareness
Required Qualifications:

- A recognized bachelor’s degree
- A minimum Modern Language Aptitude Test (MLAT) score of 40
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in transformational community development work and discipleship
- A deep heart for unreached people from the majority religion and a creative, contextual approach to ministry
- Master’s degree in counseling, missiology, or a development-related field (adult education, community development, public health, etc.)
- Current involvement in ministry among marginalized people, social work, or counseling
- Interest in exploring topics of culture and anthropology, topics of interest for the majority religion, and pursuing learning language in creative ways
Language Expectations:
Language is an essential part of ministry. Those who do not know the language will attend a language study program. The goal will be to speak, read, and write the language at a functional level in order to mentor, teach, and train others.
This work necessitates a strong ability to communicate well and the perseverance to stay actively learning. Applicants will receive one year of intensive language and cultural study on a neighboring island, followed by ongoing language study on location in the local language of the UPG. The goal will be to speak, read, and write at a high level in order to thrive in this context.
Health Considerations:
The city has adequate health-care facilities and doctors, and most medications will be available. Serious health issues are typically handled in the country’s capital, Malaysia, or Singapore.
Expectations for Spouse:
Spousal roles vary based on the spouse’s gifts, training, and abilities as well as the needs of the team. It is expected that both spouses will be meaningfully involved in meeting ministry objectives depending on the nature of family roles, children, etc.
It is expected that both spouses will be fully involved in growing and maintaining the team’s meaningful and impactful presence in this location.
Children’s Education:
There is no international school available. Local school options have been proven to be satisfactory for younger children. Supplementing homeschooling, a modular study program, or boarding schools are also options. Homeschooling is an option for each child’s entire school career. There is a small community of homeschoolers in the city who meet regularly for activities for kids aged 2–8. A regional educational consultant will be available for consultation as needed.
Compensation Package
The successful applicant(s) will receive a full compensation package with the expectation that, once appointed, efforts will be made to raise a portion of support costs through the applicant’s network of friends, family, local church, or other resources. Information on support costs will be made available upon application. Training and/or coaching in fundraising is available.
Whole-Life Health
As part of an evangelical denomination, we are committed to biblical holism, which is modeled and reflected through our work. Due to this commitment, part of the required qualifications includes optimal emotional, spiritual, and physical health. These will be assessed during the application process.
Important Clarification
Applicant(s) should be aware that serving in the international world often requires a higher degree of grace and flexibility. For example, overseas teams can be suddenly and unexpectedly impacted by illness, government decisions, financial realities, team changes, or other factors beyond the team’s control. The challenge for applicants is that these factors can sometimes necessitate the sudden redefining of a position, which may take place before, during, or after the application/interview process has begun or is completed.
