aXcess: Assist the Khmer Evangelical Church in Reaching Unreached Minority Groups in Cambodia

The Khmer Evangelical Church of Cambodia (KEC) of the C&MA—started in 1923, destroyed by genocide in the 1970s, miraculously reborn in the 1990s, and now entering the final phase of church development—is becoming a missionary-sending church. They need you to come alongside and help develop and strengthen their missionary sending process and structures. This includes promotion of missions to local churches, recruitment and training of new missionaries, management and support of existing missionaries, and researching potential new mission fields for the KEC.

Position Type

  • International worker (IW)–aXcess –Vocational Track or Clergy Track
  • Single or couple
  • Church planting, theological education, evangelism, leadership development

Responsibilities:

Assist the KEC to:

Ministry Location Information:

After (and perhaps even during) language study, you will probably be living in the capital city of Phnom Penh. This will provide a central location close to KEC leaders and one of the KEC Bible schools. You will be doing a lot of travelling to visit national missionaries, other Bible schools, KEC churches, and other gatherings to promote KEC missions. Living conditions in Phnom Penh can range from luxurious to basic. In the countryside, it ranges from basic to primitive. It is hot, humid, and dusty (or muddy, depending on the season!) pretty much everywhere, but it is also beautiful.

Characteristics of International Workers:

Required Qualifications:

Vocational Track

Clergy (Consecration & Ordination) Track

Both Vocational and Clergy Tracks

Language Expectations:

Language is an essential part of ministry. Those who do not know the language will attend a language study program. The goal will be to speak, read, and write the language at a functional level in order to mentor, teach, and train others.

We use the Growing Participatory Approach (GPA) and encourage a home stay at the beginning up to three months. There are also several language schools (i.e. Gateway to Khmer – G2K).  Sometimes language learners live at our rural ministry training center for a more immersive experience. Khmer is the only language required.

Health Considerations:

The health system in Cambodia is poor (but better than it used to be!). We are right next door to Thailand, however, which has excellent doctors.

Expectations for Spouse:

Spousal roles vary based on the spouse’s gifts, training, and abilities as well as the needs of the team. It is expected that both spouses will be meaningfully involved in meeting ministry objectives depending on the nature of family roles, children, etc.

Children’s Education:

There are numerous international schools of various types available in Phnom Penh. Some provincial capitals also have small international schools. Some workers in rural (and urban) locations homeschool.  There are also Christian international boarding schools in Penang, Malaysia, and Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Compensation Package

The successful applicant(s) will receive a full compensation package with the expectation that, once appointed, efforts will be made to raise a portion of support costs through the applicant’s network of friends, family, local church, or other resources. Information on support costs will be made available upon application. Training and/or coaching in fundraising is available.

Whole-Life Health

As part of an evangelical denomination, we are committed to biblical holism, which is modeled and reflected through our work. Due to this commitment, part of the required qualifications includes optimal emotional, spiritual, and physical health. These will be assessed during the application process.

Important Clarification

Applicant(s) should be aware that serving in the international world often requires a higher degree of grace and flexibility. For example, overseas teams can be suddenly and unexpectedly impacted by illness, government decisions, financial realities, team changes, or other factors beyond the team’s control. The challenge for applicants is that these factors can sometimes necessitate the sudden redefining of a position, which may take place before, during, or after the application/interview process has begun or is completed.
