Prayer Letter/Ministry Update

As Field Director, I had the opportunity recently to give a short eulogy for a Thai man who passed away suddenly of a heart attack. His history with our mission lasted more than 5 decades. As a young boy, Prayat would regularly pass one of our International Workers and ask her if she would teach him English. Bonnie Carlsen was a very busy lady, and would tell the boy that she really did not have the time in her schedule to teach him. After seeing his persistence, she finally agreed to teach him one hour a week. Bonnie had never taught a blind person English before.

Prayat proved to be very bright and went on to study at the Teachers College. There were no textbooks in Braille in those days. So, Bonnie would read each of his textbooks and record them onto an old cassette player for Prayat to listen to and review. Eventually, Prayat completed a PhD in English and opened 11 schools for the visually impaired in Thailand.

Dr. Prayat and Bonnie Carlsen were always very close and she thought of him as a son. As a young man Prayat would refer to himself as "Prayat Carlsen". After retiring to the US, Rev. Bill Carlsen developed kidney disease and went to be with Jesus not long into his retirement. His memorial service was in Mahaffey, PA. Dr. Prayat was in Canada at the time and decided to make his way to the funeral ALONE. To the surprise of the Carlsen family, as the memorial service was about to start, in walked Dr. Prayat. What a huge blessing for the Carlsen's!

Many years have passed, yet I was reminded as I prepared the eulogy that God keeps the records and it is He who blesses. How could Bonnie ever imagine the impact of her teaching a blind Thai boy how to speak English?

I am into my 33rd year of ministry in Thailand. I pray God will use my life as He has done with those who have come before me.
