Part-time Worship Leader Church of the Shepherd is looking for a part-time worship leader to serve our Church in the upcoming 2019/20 year, with possible longer-term potential. We are a small congregation in the diverse neighborhood of Hyde Park. Though we only have 25-30 people, we have consistently had vibrant worship, with piano, guitar, violin, and cello. As three of our musicians are moving away this summer, including one of our two worship leaders, we are looking for someone who can join our team and help lead us in this next season of worship. Qualifications: 1. A clear testimony of faith in Jesus Christ and a vital, growing personal relationship with Him. 2. Commitment to the mission, vision, and worship philosophy of Church of the Shepherd. 3. A heart for the spiritual formation of those in the congregation. Abilities: 1. Demonstrated experience as a worship leader, including leading multi-instrumental groups. 2. Skilled vocally as well as in playing piano or guitar. 3. Relational skills and an enthusiastic presence for leading church in worship. 4. Basic understanding of the use of technology in worship including a sound board, computers, and Power Point. 5. Ability to work alongside our Art Team to incorporate other artforms as needed. 6. Ability to lead songs in languages other than English. (preferred) Responsibilities: 1. Build the necessary team to carry out our music ministry, including recruitment and team management 2. Oversee song selection, media preparation and presentation, and coordination of all instrumentalists, vocalists, and dramatists. 3. Serve as worship leader at least half of the time on Sundays and special services. 4. Serve on the worship team for each service. 5. Direct all weekly activities and rehearsals necessary to facilitate worship in services. 6. Oversee the worship department budget, organization, and volunteers. 7. Build contacts and relationships with local musicians, studios, and clubs for both evangelistic and staffing purposes. 8. Set annual goals for the worship ministry that are in line with our vision and then evaluate how those goals were attained or modified during the year. Additional Opportunities • Freedom and latitude to experiment with different worship methods, styles, etc. • Opportunities to serve the church in other capacities (if desired), including but not limited to preaching, teaching and outreach. • Opportunities to work closely with multiple pastors in a discipleship context, to develop both worship and additional giftings. Compensation • Compensation will come in the form of housing, meaning a reduced rent on the third-floor apartment. o The exact reduction will depend on how much of a time commitment is desired by applicant. o There are additional responsibilities related to the house that will come along with the reduced rent that can be discussed during an interview. This will also have bearing on the exact financial details. • The house has its own parking lot, which the residents are free to use. It is also within three blocks of multiple bus lines and a Metra line. Additional Description of the church: Church of the Shepherd is a small urban church in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, near to the University of Chicago. We are a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance denomination and have been a congregation for about 35 years. Our mission as a body is “Living in Christ • With One Another • For the Sake of God's Mission in Hyde Park and the World.” We live out this mission through a vibrant and tight-knit community that values time together as well as service to our community all undergirded by our devotion to Christ and pursuit of spiritual growth together. We are a unique and special congregation in a number of ways, not the least of which is that we meet for worship on the third floor of a big old house, a house in which one of our pastors and one of our worship leaders also live. The house is a very important part of our community, a resource that God has blessed us with and serves as the center of much of our ministry. We are also unique in how we model a co-pastoral model. We believe this is a great strength of our ministry and gives us a special ability to model and teach a form of church leadership that is often underutilized in churches. Lastly, we strongly believe in being a church where everyone gets to participate in whatever ways their gifting may lead them. We are a church where “everyone gets to play.” Because we are a transient community, we have very few embedded historical traditions, which allows for a great freedom for people to try new things. This means we encourage people to try new things, be they in existing ministries or new if they feel God is leading them in a specific direction. This also means that we encourage failure, for it is through failure that we learn, and ministry is no exception to that rule.
